Packing & preparation — FAQs

10 answers about packing & preparation — shipping from the USA to Kenya and freight across America.

Packing & preparation

How should I pack my shipment?

Use strong new boxes, cushion contents, fill empty spaces, seal well and label every box with your name, the receiver and a box number.

Should I use pallets?

Palletising commercial cargo and heavy boxes makes handling safer. Use heat-treated wooden pallets marked with the ISPM 15 stamp.

What is ISPM 15?

An international standard requiring wooden packaging to be treated to prevent pests. Untreated wood can be rejected.

Should I wrap boxes in plastic?

Stretch-wrapping pallets is recommended. Avoid plastic carrier bags, which are banned in Kenya.

How do I protect electronics?

Use original packaging if possible, or wrap in bubble wrap and pack tightly in a double-wall box.

How do I label boxes?

Write the shipper and receiver names, the destination town and a box number that matches the packing list.

Can I use old boxes?

New boxes are better. Old boxes lose strength and may not survive ocean transit.

How heavy can one box be?

Keep boxes to a weight one person can lift safely, ideally under about 25 kg (55 lb), unless palletised.

Do you supply packing materials?

Packing materials can be arranged on request.

Should I photograph my goods?

Yes. Photos of items and packed boxes help with insurance claims and customs questions.
