A practical comparison of speed, cost, security and cargo types to help you choose the right mode.
Choosing between air and sea freight comes down to three questions: how fast, how heavy, and how valuable?
Choose air freight when
- The shipment is urgent
- Goods are small, dense and high-value (electronics, spare parts, documents)
- Stock-outs would cost more than the freight premium
Choose sea freight when
- Goods are heavy or bulky (furniture, machinery, vehicles)
- You are shipping household goods or a large commercial order
- You can plan several weeks ahead
A middle path
Many importers split shipments: urgent items by air, the bulk by sea. Consolidating several suppliers’ goods into one sea shipment is another effective way to cut cost.
Compare our air freight and sea freight services.
Side-by-side comparison
| Air freight | Sea freight | |
|---|---|---|
| Transit to Kenya | About 5–10 days door to door | About 4–7 weeks door to door |
| Cost | Higher per kilo | Much lower per cubic metre |
| Arrival | JKIA, Nairobi | Port of Mombasa |
| Size limits | Limited by aircraft | Very flexible — up to full containers and vehicles |
| Restrictions | Stricter on batteries and dangerous goods | More flexible, but still regulated |
Environmental impact
Ocean freight produces far lower emissions per tonne-kilometre than air freight. If sustainability matters to your business, shipping by sea and planning ahead is the greener choice.
Security and risk
Air cargo spends less time in transit and is handled in secure airport environments, which suits high-value electronics. Sea freight in a sealed full container (FCL) also offers good security because the container is not opened until destination unless customs inspects it.
Decision checklist
- Do you need it within two weeks? → Air.
- Is it heavier than a few hundred kilograms or bulky? → Sea.
- Is it worth more per kilo than the air premium? → Consider air.
- Is it a vehicle, furniture or a household move? → Sea.
